Roy Hargrove embodied the brightest promise of his jazz generation, both as a young guardian of the bebop tradition and a bridge to hip-hop and R&B, He also received the approval of his elders, Clark Terry adored him, Bobby Watson provided Roy with some of his first experience in a recording studio, and Sonny Rollins featured him on a tune called "Young Roy" in 1991 as well as at his 80th birthday celebration in 2010. Roy Hargrove blew his trumpet with soul and power. Born in Waco, Texas, on October 16, 1969, he discovered his gift early. Wynton Marsalis heard him play in high school and knew he was special. By age 20, Hargrove was already recording his own albums in New York City. His sound mixed jazz, Latin rhythms, hip-hop, and R&B into something fresh. He won two Grammy Awards and worked with D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Common. His trumpet sang on ballads and exploded during fast solos. Hargrove could make
