Galina was the prima ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre from 1928-1944 when Stalin had her transferred to the Bolshoi Theatre where she was the prima ballerina until 1960 when she retired at the age of 50. She then went on to coach some of the most notable names in Russian ballet including Ekaterina Maximova and Ludmila Semenyaka.
