🚨 SHISHALDIN VOLCANO ALERT RAISED – AUGUST 25, 2025 🚨 The Alaska Volcano Observatory has raised Shishaldin’s alert level to ADVISORY (YELLOW) after a surge in seismic tremors, infrasound, and sulfur dioxide gas. Steaming from the summit has intensified. These are the same signals recorded before the 2023 eruption that disrupted international flights. Shishaldin erupts with little warning. Flight paths and communities near Unimak Island are now on alert. #Shishaldin #AlaskaVolcano #VolcanoAlert

Alaska volcano monitored for possible eruption amid 'volcanic unrest'

A giant volcano in Alaska is showing signs of an impending eruption. Significantly elevated levels of volcanic gas emissions were recently observed around Mount Spurr, which is located 75 miles from Anchorage that is home to nearly 300,000 people. The Alaska Volcano Observatory said the emissions 'confirm' that new magma is flowing beneath the volcano, indicating an foreseeable eruption. 📷 US Geological Survey / Alaska Volcano Observatory / Google Maps #volcano #alaska #nature #news | America N

🚨ALASKA RING OF FIRE: VOLCANO ALERTS AND EARTHQUAKES TOGETHER In the last 48 hours, the Alaska Volcano Observatory has kept Great Sitkin Volcano at WATCH / ORANGE, confirming that lava is still actively erupting inside the summit crater. This eruption has been going on since 2021, slowly filling the crater with new lava. Small local earthquakes continue to be recorded near the volcano, a sign that magma is still moving and the system is not done yet. Shishaldin Volcano is currently at ADVISORY

⚠️🌍 BREAKING: Great Sitkin Volcano Erupts in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands 🌍⚠️ Great Sitkin, one of Alaska’s most active volcanoes, is showing powerful new activity: 🔥 Lava fills the summit crater — steady growth of lava flows now pushing down the southwest slope. ⛰️ Rockfalls triggered as unstable slopes collapse under the pressure of molten rock. 🚨 Hazards: Lava may enter valleys below, endangering terrain, ecosystems, and potential infrastructure. ✈️ Air traffic risk: Elevated heat, steaming,

Today, we share an animated gif of the lava dome growing at Great Sitkin volcano in the Aleutian Islands, seen in a series of high-res satellite radar (SAR) images July 25-Aug 27, 2021. The dome grew from ~90 m to ~1000 m across and is continuing to grow. Great Sitkin is currently at Color Code ORANGE and Alert Level WATCH. 3 years of lava effusion at #GreatSitkin! After a brief explosive eruption on May 25, 2021, lava began oozing out of a vent in the summit crater in July 2021. The first sign of new lava at the surface was a July 23, 2021 satellite radar Terra-SAR-X image. These radar images can see through the persistent clouds of the Aleutian Islands and show an incredible time series animation of the lava flow growth. The most recent lava flows have oozed out above the vent and overtopped early emplaced lavas.

Last week, a AVO field crew got a chance to check on mud volcanoes that lie just east of Glennallen, across the Copper River valley and near Mount Drum. These mud volcanoes are created by hot magma deep below the surface heating rocks above. This fluid rises through the layers of rock, and carries mud and carbon dioxide to the surface. One of these mud volcanoes, Shrub, forms a 350-ft high cone. This year our field crews found a line of about 25 new small springs, ranging in size from about a ha

Continuing our anniversary posts marking 3 years of lava extrusion at #GreatSitkin, here’s a video collected Sept 3, 2023 by M. Loewen, showing the lava-ice contact and panning over to the active vent area. Alaska Volcano Observatory geologists were able to visit and sample Great Sitkin volcano’s active lava flow in September 2023. Analyses of these lavas shows that the composition is a fairly typical basaltic andesite. usgsvolcanoes USGS Volcanoes uafgi UAF Geophysical Institute Alaska DGGS #al

Mount #Spurr update: On Dec 18, an AVO crew conducted a gas and observation flight of Mount #Spurr to measure volcanic gases (H2O, SO2, CO2, H2S) and do a photo survey of the summit region and Crater Peak. The new gas measurements showed no significant changes from the last gas flight at Spurr in June. The lake, which formed earlier this year, has greatly increased in size since June, and is mostly covered in snow and ice with some floating yellow sulfur. Enjoy this video taken during the flight

Earthquakes, ground deformation, and melting of ice in the summit crater of Mount Spurr are some of the observations that have resulted in the volcano’s current elevated alert status. This animation shows the earthquakes detected by AVO in the proximity of Spurr volcano from December 1, 2024, to February 11, 2025. The earthquakes are presented in (a) a top-down view, (b) a N-S transect, and (c) a E-W transect cutting across Mount Spurr summit. Each earthquake, sized by their magnitude, first app
