If you see a gap between your soil and the pot, this is why! When soil gets dry, it can become compacted. The soil shrinks in around the roots of your plant, and pulls away from the edge of the pot. When this happens, the soil gets hydrophobic (it repels water). Simple top watering will not be effective- the waste will run down those gaps at the side, maybe saturate a little into the top and edges, but leave the center of the pot bone dry. The solution?
