Aug 8, 2013 · Super Android 13 didn't happen in the wait before the Cell Games. Trunks still had his sword and his short hair, and Gohan wasn't a Super Saiyan yet. Dr. Gero's supercomputer was still intact during the movie as well, and in the anime/manga, Trunks destroyed that well before the Cell Games.

I always wondered why it took them so long to go SSJ when their base forms were clearly losing the fight. I think literally the only movie pre-Super era where they immediately went to SSJ was vs Broly... it's shonen manga/anime staple - start out small, then ramp up the power levels.
