The U.S. Open continues to be his kryptonite. Scheffler shot his sixth consecutive over-par round at the U.S. Open, including all four rounds last year at Pinehurst No. 2. Scheffler, who opened with 73 on Thursday, said he didn’t hit the ball into the correct spots and paid the price for it.
One man who wasn’t cursing, however, was Sam Burns, who posted the third lowest score in Oakmont’s U.S. Open history with a remarkable second-round 65. That’s a full 10 shots better than what Rahm mustered on Friday, but let’s just keep that between us … at least until Rahmbo cools down.
The first round of the 2025 U.S. Open lived up to the billing as Oakmont Country Club yielded only 10 rounds under par -- with an average score near 5 over par -- despite ideal conditions on Thursday.
