Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trailed in two provincial elections as votes were counted on Tuesday, TV channels said, a fresh setback after it failed to win a clear majority in the general election this year.

This was also the first assembly election to be held since the federal government revoked the region's autonomy and changed the former state into a federally governed territory of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.

The counting of votes cast in the Haryana Assembly elections has begun, with the ruling BJP eyeing a third consecutive term, trailing in early leads, while the Congress is hopeful of winning.

The NC-Congress alliance is expected to win 31-50 seats, while the BJP may secure 20-34 seats in the 90-member assembly. The People's Democratic Party (PDP) is projected to win 5-12 seats. These assembly elections are the first in J&K since the 2019 bifurcation into two union territories.
