A coalition of more than a dozen state attorneys filed lawsuits against TikTok on Tuesday, claiming the company knowingly allows its algorithm to get kids addicted to its platform.

Fourteen attorneys general have sued TikTok, alleging the social media platform has made children addicted to the service and that it has harmed their mental health. The suit is led by Democratic Attorneys General Letitia James of New York and Rob Bonta of California,

The attorneys general of 13 states and Washington D.C. claim TikTok falsely claims its platform is safe for children.

The use of social media among teens is nearly universal in the U.S. and many other parts of the world. Almost all teens ages 13 to 17 in the U.S. report using a social media platform, with about a third saying they use social media "almost constantly," according to the Pew Research Center.
