Gemini is coming to the Google TV platform but not to Google's own TV Streamer. So why buy Google hardware when the biggest advantage is being thrown away?
Google announced that it would be bringing Gemini to Google TV, allowing for more conversational requests to your television. This week during Google I/O, Google expanded on this news, announcing the release of the Android 16 for TV beta.
During the Android Show on Tuesday, leading up to Google I/O 2025, Google announced that it's bringing Gemini to Wear OS smartwatches and Google TV. The
Gemini can do just about anything you can imagine. Just tap on the Gemini icon in the Chrome tab strip or the OS task bar. You can also access it by hitting Ctrl+G on mac, or Alt+G on Windows. Google is bringing both regular Gemini and the new Gemini Live which it first debuted on the Pixel 9 devices last fall.
Google TV is going to see a significant shift in the coming months. Instead of the Google Assistant users have been used to interacting with for basic needs, Gemini will be the new AI helper. Gemini’s integration will be similar to what’s seen on Android devices, though it’ll be tuned for entertainment and education.
Currently, there are no reports of Gemini appearing on the smaller 2nd-generation Nest Mini despite it being the other speaker eligible for the Google Home Public Preview. There is also no word on Gemini being tested in Nest Hubs at the moment.
Google TV will soon prompt you to rate and review apps. In today’s Android Developer Blog, Google mentions that it’s expanding the “In-App Ratings and Reviews API to TV.”
