Two people were killed in a head-on collision on Illinois 97, just west of Farmington Cemetery Road in rural Sangamon County, near 2:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Illinois State Police officials. The site of the crash was about eight miles northwest of Springfield.

Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, according to a statement he released Monday.

Illinois poet laureate Angela Jackson will visit Springfield over five days in March as part of a week of programs honoring Poetry Out Loud.

Gov. Jim Edgar, who also served as Illinois Secretary of State and leads the Edgar Fellows program at the University of Illinois, wrote in an email to the program's fellows that he and his wife, Brenda,
