Rwanda’s health minister said Sunday that an outbreak of the Marburg virus is not spreading in the country, citing the absence of new infections or deaths in the past six days.

This highly lethal virus, a cousin of Ebola, is striking the country for the first time. In three weeks, Rwanda has received 1,700 doses of vaccine and installed measures to stop the spread.

Rwanda is effectively managing a Marburg virus outbreak, with 1,146 contacts identified and only three active cases remaining. The virus, transmitted through close contact with infected people, has caused 15 deaths.

A deadly, Ebola-like virus called Marburg is currently causing an outbreak in Rwanda. The country declared an outbreak of Marburg virus disease on Sept. 27 and has reported 58 confirmed cases and 13 deaths as of Oct. 8. Many of those who have been infected are health-care workers.
