NASCAR is pressing pause on its Chicago Street Race, answering at least one major question about its schedule for next season.

After three years of taking place in Grant Park during Independence Day weekend, both NASCAR officials and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson's office confirmed the race wouldn't return to the city in 2026.

NASCAR's acknowledgment that it hopes to revive the Joliet facility comes just days after the organization hit pause on the Chicago Street Race downtown. NASCAR said it hopes to return to the downtown streets in 2027, though there is no guarantee that will happen.

Chicago officials met with NASCAR representatives to discuss the potential return of the Chicago Street Race in 2027, with a focus on improved set up and tear down efficiency, financial impact, and community engagement.

NASCAR will return to Southern California in style in June 2026. The NASCAR Cup Series' second street race destination isn't just the sport's debut in the San Diego area, but also the site of the first race in NASCAR history to be held on a military installation.

Aldermen who represent downtown met with NASCAR officials via Zoom on Monday to begin paving a path forward for the Chicago Street Race in 2027 — and possibly 2028. The meeting came three days after NASCAR announced it was pausing the race in 2026.

An on-track feud between Joey Logano and Ross Chastain over the past few weeks appears to be carrying over at Dover. The two have been involved in a handful of incidents already, though the fireworks haven’t quite exploded just yet.
