Egypt has finally opened the world's largest archeological museum after more than a decade of construction for a trial run.

Exclusive: Galleries could welcome visitors as early as Wednesday, though ‘King Tut’ collection will remain at the central Cairo location for now

The Grand Egyptian Museum will partially open its main galleries on Wednesday, including 12 halls that exhibit aspects of ancient Egypt, as part of a trial run, officials say.

When complete, the museum will showcase more than 100,000 objects, including treasures from the tomb of King Tutankhamun.

The long-awaited Great Egyptian Museum at the pyramids of Giza has made its biggest opening yet - although operators are still reluctant to name a date for the conclusion of this billion-dollar project more than 10 years in the making.

Visitors are greeted at the entrance by the colossal statue of Ramesses the Great, one of the museum's most iconic pieces.
