The roof of a large machine shed collapsed before crews arrived to the scene, the Creston Fire Department said in a release.
Critics warned the plan could worsen prison overcrowding without new funding or investments in rehabilitation.
The structure predates both the city of Mitchellville and the Civil War and was built by the town’s founder, Thomas Mitchell.
