The Supreme Court declined an emergency request to block Biden administration climate standards on power plant emissions.

President Joe Biden’s contentious climate rule for power plants will take effect after the Supreme Court declined on Wednesday to block the regulation that is a core part of the administration’s efforts to strip greenhouse gases from electricity grid.

The Biden administration has said its plan would protect communities from pollution and help the nation meet long-term goals to combat the climate crisis.

The regulation is aimed at curbing carbon emissions from coal- and gas-fired power plants by using a process called “carbon capture” that challengers say is not economically viable.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to block a Biden administration rule setting climate standards for power plants — but hinted it could take up the case at a later time. The high court rejected requests from red states and industry stakeholders to temporarily halt the rule while other litigation against it plays out.
