Belichick famously won two Super Bowls as a defensive coordinator under legendary coach Bill Parcells with the New York Giants. His tenure in New England didn’t end well after quarterback Tom Brady’s departure, and now his first year as a college coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels is going even worse.
The Giants have had two Hall of Fame head coaches, five Coach of the Year award winners, and five who won an NFL Championship or Super Bowl. Of the 22 men who have led the franchise in its 100-plus seasons, here is Newsday’s ranking on the top 10:
Belichick was the defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells when the Giants won Super Bowls 21 and 25, and he has often waxed poetic about the organization and his star player, Lawrence Taylor.
Away from the spotlight, Daboll’s abrasive personality ultimately contributed to his demise, as key assistant coaches — most notably, defensive coordinator Wink Martindale — rushed to get away from him. Perhaps that will serve as a lesson to the next Giants coach — whether that’s interim replacement Mike Kafka or someone from the outside.
