The northern lights will inject additional dazzle for some across the U.S. this New Year's Eve. The big picture: An incoming solar storm on Tuesday night will provide aurora viewers in many northern states and "some of the lower Midwest to Oregon" one last chance to catch the lights this year,

A winter storm system is expected to bring up to eight inches of mixed precipitation to the St. Louis area, with areas north of I-70 seeing mainly snow, areas south of metro St. Louis facing significant icing, and the metro area in a transition zone with many forms of winter precipitation in the forecast.

The northern lights are forecast to put on a New Year's show as far south as Illinois, New York and Oregon starting Monday night, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
