Hong Kong issued its highest storm warning on Sunday (July 20) as Typhoon Wipha, packing winds of more than 103 miles (167 kilometres) per hour, brought heavy rain and wind across the territory, forcing the cancellation of more than 200 flights.

The Observatory has raised the 10 storm signal, as hurricane-force Wipha descends on China’s southern coast. After hoisting highest storm signal at 9:20am on Sunday, the Observatory said that the alert would probably stay in place for some time: “Do not go outside and stay away from exposed windows and doors.

Severe Tropical Storm Wipha (formerly Crising) maintained its strength Saturday as it moved away from the Philippine landmass, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

The Hong Kong Observatory on Friday issued the Amber Rainstorm warning signal at 11.15am as tropical cyclone Wipha edges closer to Hong Kong.

Tropical storm Wipha is on course to enter within 800 kilometres of Macau tomorrow, with the signal no.1 alert to be issued.

Storm Wipha is set to enter the East Sea, known internationlly as South China Sea, on July 19, with forecasts warning the storm will intensify as it moves closer to China's coastline.
